About John Pirie Secondary School
JPSS has about 640 students, including 48 Indigenous students. The Year 8-12 school offers many alternative pathway programs including SAASTA, FLIPS, FLO, Trades School Centre and Industrial Pathways.
JPSS became the first SAASTA country site and was officially opened on February 13 2009, which coincided with National Sorry Day.
Port Pirie is located on the Spencer Gulf and is approximately 240kms north of Adelaide. The population of Port Pirie is around 22,000, which also includes surrounding townships. Port Pirie is a close-knit community with a strong sporting culture.
There is a SAASTA program operating in this school that supports young Aboriginal people to complete their SACE. SAASTA is a SA Government Social Inclusion initiative.
