Schools - The 2011 season has comes to a close with an exciting carnival weekend
The 2011 season has come to a close with an exciting carnival weekend
We have just wrapped up the fourth Aboriginal Power Cup, which turned out to be even bigger and better than in its previous years!
Over 300 students from 23 schools across South Australia came together from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 June for the carnival at Alberton Oval. During the carnival, schools competed in football games and participated in a career expo, skill development workshops and a cultural morning as part of the 2011 Aboriginal Power Cup.
The weekend finished with the girls and boys Grand Final games played at AAMI Stadium before the Power versus North Melbourne match.
Making it to the Grand Final involved more than just playing a good game of footy. The two girls and two boy's teams that made it through to the Grand Final games were determined by how well they performed during the carnival weekend, and also whether they collectively completed all the required school curriculum tasks during terms one and two consistently, and to a high standard.
A big congratulations to the winners of the 2011 Aboriginal Power Cup ... Salisbury High School boys team and the Windsor Gardens Vocational College girls team!
Aboriginal Power Cup: Girls Grand Final

- Murray Bridge - 0.4 (4)
Aboriginal Power Cup: Boys Grand Final
- Salisbury - 13.4 (82)
- Murray Bridge - 7.6 (48)
Skill Development
The Power Cup wasn't all just about footy. The focus of this year's program was on skill development which is about developing skills that will assist students to finish Year 12 and move on to further education or into the career of their choice.
This year all Aboriginal Power Cup students were required to complete one of two SACE Units (Stage 1 or Stage 2 Integrated Learning) by completing curriculum work throughout the program in school, during terms one and two.
The school curriculum tasks included recruiting mentors and coaches, designing their own team's Guernsey, writing a profile for this website, undertaking career research and planning and cooking a healthy meal for members of their community. Students were also visited by stars of the Port Adelaide Football Club to talk about goal setting, career aspirations, life/work skills and football skills and drills. These school visits were an important part of the program where students could ask players questions, and be motivated and inspired by their football heroes.
