Salisbury High School - Salisbury makes the most of their visit from Power players

< < Back

The Port Adelaide Football Club travelled into the northern suburbs this week to visit the Aboriginal Power Cup (APC) students from Salisbury and Valley View high on Wednesday 4thMay 2011.

On this visit we had Power player Daniel Motlop, former Power player Wade Thompson, and former APC student and now completing a traineeship with DECS Jessie Wilson. I believe both Wade and Jessie are very impressive young people with huge potential and offered a lot of advice to the Salisbury students about their lives and we’re they’re heading in the future.

We had a full class and a great discussion on Aboriginal Culture and where everyone, including the teachers about where they come from. A few students, PAFC staff and teachers had some cultural and family connections, which was great to witness and to also see the students nodding when this occurred was very satisfying.

Lesson 2 was the Goal Setting activity and we asked the students to come up with their team and individual goals for the APC program, as well as their career aspirations. Once again we had some great input and ideas from students and they came up with some good goals for the team and themselves.

There was a real variety of career aspirations from the students, some of which included;

  • Chef
  • Boxing champion
  • Personal trainer, and
  • Health worker

Mots, Wade, Jessie and Pauly discussed their goals and career aspirations with the students and interacted with them as they were completing this task. Pauly discussed the P-Plate program and the life/work skillsactivities in the APC booklet, and explained the job opportunities that will be available to them through APC.

We finished in the class room and headed outside for some football drills and skills. Mots, Wade & Jessie (very impressive footballer) then played some footy games, with the students challenging them in some kicking drills. These students can seriously play and will be tough to beat in the carnival.

We would like to thank the students and teachers from Salisbury and Valley View for hosting us and we will see you all soon.

Good luck in the carnival.
