About John Pirie Secondary School
JPSS has about 660 students, including 51 Indigenous students. The Year 8-12 school offers many alternative pathway programs including SAASTA, Flexible Learning Initiative Programs (Flipside), Flexible Learning Options (FLO), Trades School Centre and Industrial Pathways.
Port Pirie is located on the Spencer Gulf and is approximately 240kms north of Adelaide. The population of Port Pirie is around 22,000, which also includes surrounding townships. Port Pirie is a close-knit community with a strong sporting culture.
There is a SAASTA program operating in this school that supports young Aboriginal people to complete their SACE. Students study Integrated Learning - Power Cup and Certificate II in Sport & Recreation as part of their SAASTA program.
JPSS became the first SAASTA country site and was officially opened on February 13 2009, which coincided with National Sorry Day.
In 2012 there will be a John Pirie Boys and a Girls team and it is their 6th year of involvement in the Aboriginal Power Cup. A few boys from the Yorke Peninsula will also be joining the John Pirie Boys team in 2012.
John Pirie Girls team made the Final in 2008 and then went one better in 2009 by winning the Power Cup Grand Final.
