About the Cup
The Aboriginal Power Cup is a joint initiative between the Port Adelaide Football Club, the South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy and the Government of South Australia - Attorney-General's Department - with support from the South Australian National Football League.
The competition - for boys and girls - runs from the beginning of term 2 (April) and ends with a football carnival on August 28 & 29. The Aboriginal Power Cup Grand Final will be played as the curtain raiser to the Power versus Kangaroos at AAMI Stadium on August 29, 2009.
The competition aims to develop young Aboriginal people’s leadership skills and encourage them to seek positive outcomes in life.
The Aboriginal Power Cup is not just about football. Students must have a high school attendance and contribute curriculum work to play in the football carnival. The Power Cup Grand Final is played between the two teams that perform best in all aspects of the competition - not just football.
2009 is the second year of the Aboriginal Power Cup. 10 schools are participating this year, four for the first time. You can read more about the participating schools here.
Participating schools will be visited by stars from the Port Adelaide Football Club, such as Daniel Motlop, Shaun Burgoyne, Wade Thompson and Danyle Pearce. These players will help motivate the students to be their best for the competition.
The Aboriginal Power Cup picks up on key recommendations from Monsignor David Cappo’s To Break the Cycle report. It was modelled on a successful project from the Charlton Athletic Football Club in the United Kingdom.
