Whyalla Combined - Whyalla Combined team gets a visit from D-Rod
Another team new to the mix in this year's Aboriginal Power Cup (APC) is the Whyalla Combined team. Drawing upon students from Edward John Eyre High School and Stuart High School, the Whyalla Combined team will be represented in both the boys and girls competitions this year.
On Tuesday this group of eager, talented students was lucky enough to have a visit from Power player David Rodan. Accompanying David was Adelaide Thunderbirds Netballer Beth Shimmin who was also happy to speak from her experience and act as a role model to the girls' team.
A discussion on the importance of goal-setting and career pathways started off the two hour session. David shared stories from his life thus far as an AFL footballer. This has included having to move interstate to follow his dream, and two knee reconstructions! Beth's story showed the students how important it is to believe in yourself and never give up on your dream. Beth, 23, has only just made it to the Thunderbirds 12 player list. That makes her old for a rookie, but it demonstrated how she persisted until she reached her goal.
A kick and catch on the oval followed. Most of the boys play A Grade for their local footy clubs, so they will be ones to watch out for. The girls also looked at home with the footy in their hands, so we look forward to a strong showing from both Whyalla teams when they get to Alberton next week.
