Port Lincoln High School - Aboriginal Power Cup kicks off for 2010 in Port Lincoln
Students at Port Lincoln High School have been visited by some Port Adelaide legends to help kick-start their 2010 Aboriginal Power Cup (APC) campaign. Four-time Magarey Medallist Russell Ebert along with Brownlow Medallist and 2004 premiership hero Gavin Wanganeen joined the students for an afternoon on February 3rd.
The Port Lincoln boys’ team, 2009 APC champions, are keen to defend their title, whilst the girls’ team, who narrowly missed out on making the final last year, are eager to take that extra step in 2010 and go all the way.
Their chances of achieving these goals have no doubt been aided by the PAFC visit, which saw the students spend time in the classroom and on the footy field.
After a brief overview of what the APC holds in store for them this year, the students discussed the important topics of goal-setting and career pathways with Russell and Gavin. Students were asked to list what their goals for this year’s APC are, both for their team and as individuals. They were able to hear firsthand how goal-setting had played such an important part in Russell and Gavin’s careers – during their football careers, but just as importantly, in their professional lives after footy.
The discussion then naturally progressed to a focus on career options and pathways. Some students already had plans in place for after school. The APC will once again host a careers expo during the carnival, and students will get the chance to find out about a number of careers that are well within their reach.
Finally, the group all headed out onto the school oval for a kick. Under the watchful eyes of Russell and Gavin, the students completed a few drills, and even learnt a few new ones. These students look like they mean business!
